Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) for the treatment of uterine fibroids

Recover in days instead of weeks

Radiofrequency ablation is a minimally invasive, same-day, outpatient procedure that shrinks or eliminates fibroids. Most patients experience a rapid and significant reduction in symptoms and recovery is fast. You can return to normal activities and enjoy a greatly improved quality of life within 3–5 days and without undergoing a hysterectomy. Radiofrequency ablation is for the treatment of benign (non-cancerous) symptomatic fibroids.

During the procedure, each fibroid is destroyed by applying energy through a small ultrasound guided needle. The surrounding tissue is not affected.

Studies show that fibroids do not have to be completely removed for symptom relief. Killing the fibroid cells so they shrink and stop putting pressure on the uterus can provide relief. It has been proven that even a 10% reduction in fibroid volume can result in significant improvement in heavy periods, pelvic pain and bulk. Most patients feel symptom relief right away.

Not all OB/GYN physicians perform this surgery. You can be referred to a Prisma Health specialist for this procedure or you can schedule directly.
