Genetic Counseling

We are committed to providing informative and compassionate genetic counseling services for you, your family and your physician as part of your healthcare management.

We work closely with obstetricians to provide comprehensive prenatal genetic services and outpatient care. For our cancer patients, we partner with medical oncologists, surgeons and primary care physicians to provide timely, convenient cancer genetic counseling and testing. We also address other adult genetic conditions.

Comprehensive genetic counseling services

Our board-certified genetic counselors provide a full range of services, including:

  • Assessment of psychosocial status following a genetic diagnosis
  • Family history risk assessment and explanation of risk
  • Genetic testing and explanation of results
  • Implications of genetic disorders for you and your family
  • Referrals for specialized care
  • Resources to help patients understand a genetic diagnosis

Prenatal genetic counseling

Our genetic counselors provide counseling for patients who are at increased risk for genetic conditions and birth defects in pregnancy.

We provide the following genetic counseling services:

  • Discuss options for prenatal screening and diagnosis for pregnant women of any age, including those who are 35 and over
  • Perform a family history risk assessment
  • Review options for carrier screening of genetic diseases
  • Discuss ultrasound findings identified during pregnancy
  • Provide information about potential exposure to medications, drugs or alcohol
  • Discuss genetic testing options for preconception couples and for couples experiencing infertility or multiple pregnancy loss

Cancer genetic counseling

Our genetic counselors provide services for individuals at risk for breast cancer, ovarian cancer, colon cancer and other hereditary cancers. We also offer community outreach counseling within the state of South Carolina.

Our goals include:

  • Identifying individuals and families who are at increased risk for hereditary cancer
  • Offering options for genetic testing, screening and medical management based on personal and family histories
  • Reducing the chance for developing certain types of cancer through personalized screening and risk-reduction plans
  • Providing psychosocial support to and facilitating communication between patients and families

Adult genetic counseling

We provide genetic counseling services for adults who are at risk to inherit an adult-onset genetic condition. Depending on an individual’s personal and family history, he or she may be offered predictive, presymptomatic, or diagnostic testing to identify genetic risk factors. Our genetic counselors are trained and experienced in addressing both the genetic and psychosocial needs of an individual and their family.

Individuals who may benefit from adult genetic counseling include those with a:

  • Family history of a genetic condition
  • Known familial mutation
  • Clinical diagnosis that warrants genetic confirmation
