my name's Kaden baggley I got an
0:09
accident May of 2021 we were out tubing
0:13
and the tube hit a wave and I was
0:14
standing in the back and so my grip gave
0:17
out I went like flying off the tube when
0:19
the boat came around and did a 360 to
0:21
try to like knock people off and spin
0:23
the tube it came back and I was in the
0:26
water and no one saw me in the middle of
0:28
the boat kind of like went over my
0:29
midsection to the legs and the propeller
0:32
caught my right and left leg and then I
0:35
was like pulled up on the back of the
0:36
boat gotten NE was a to the hospital we
0:40
had a 45-minute drive to the hospital
0:42
probably the longest 45 minutes of my
0:44
life and I was able to see him and he
0:47
was awake and alert and I was able to
0:49
you know really quickly kiss him and
0:52
pray over him when patients have the
0:55
types of injuries that Kaden sustained
0:57
in his boating accident there are times
1:00
when there is such an amount of injury
1:03
to a limb and the decision is made very
1:05
early to need to proceed with amputating
1:08
the limb in his particular case it was
1:11
clear that his knee joint would not be
1:14
salvageable and that the amputation
1:16
would have to occur above the knee joint
1:18
one of the possible techniques that can
1:20
be used is an amputation by the kneecap
1:23
is actually preserved and able to be
1:26
incorporated onto the end of the thigh
1:29
bone which provides for a more
1:31
successful biomechanical end result
1:34
because the quadricep muscle is still
1:36
able to function more efficiently and
1:39
makes the prosthetic use and fitting
1:42
more
1:43
successful after the accident the next
1:46
day was Mother's Day probably the
1:48
hardest Mother's Day of my entire life
1:50
and I kept having to remind myself that
1:52
it is a happy Mother's Day my child's
1:54
alive you can get so focused on your
1:57
life before that you don't have anymore
1:59
and how hard it's going to be it's like
2:01
getting a new car or something if you
2:03
were attached to that car and then you
2:05
wrecked it and that's just kind of like
2:06
your new life and you just have to like
2:08
adapt to it and so it can either kill
2:10
you or you can beat it when a patient
2:13
has these types of injuries it always is
2:16
understandably a huge shock not only to
2:19
the patient but their entire family and
2:21
social support system I have always been
2:24
amazed at how well Kaden and his famili
2:26
have been able to come together and move
2:28
forward on A New Path pathway in life
2:30
and I think that has played heavily into
2:33
how well he's recovered and how
2:35
successful his new pathway in life
2:37
continues to
2:38
be Kaden about a year after his accident
2:41
said Mom I want to go visit people in
2:42
the hospital just give hope to people so
2:45
when they're sitting in that hospital
2:46
just staring at those four walls want to
2:48
give hope Julie Shane called me and said
2:51
would you be willing to visit Carson
2:53
Galloway who had just had an accident
2:55
and was having to make the hard choices
2:57
and
2:58
decisions my name is car Galloway and
3:01
last year I was involved in a motorcycle
3:03
accident which led to the amputation of
3:06
my right leg and a partial amputation of
3:08
my left arm I'll never forget June 23rd
3:11
as long as I live receiving that message
3:14
that my son had been into an accident
3:16
and learning how severe it was after
3:19
like his second or third surgery Dr
3:22
Tucker sat down with me and really
3:24
explained that amputation was a high
3:26
likelihood at that point at first we
3:29
were trying to wake the pros and cons of
3:31
amputating it that was when we met Kaden
3:34
and Liz they really helped with the
3:36
whole mental aspect of it them showing
3:38
us that this isn't really going to slow
3:40
you down seeing how happy he was I think
3:43
seeing him helped me lead to the
3:46
decision of amputating it one thing
3:48
Kaden said to us was you'll get through
3:50
it and you'll be able to do more than
3:53
you think you can that was very
3:54
reassuring for us what I had shared with
3:57
Carson and his mom that day was I wanted
3:59
them to know that there is life outside
4:02
this Hospital there is life outside
4:04
these four walls the injuries that we
4:05
treat every single day are life-changing
4:07
and life altering you know people don't
4:09
wake up and ask for these things to
4:10
happen they're not planning for these
4:11
things to happen these things happen to
4:14
them usually even though life looks
4:16
different it still can be the same you
4:18
can still go out and do the same things
4:20
it just may be done a little bit
4:21
differently me and cson have gone done
4:24
like multiple activities we've gone
4:25
skiing like I also told him when he was
4:27
in the hospital that like I had started
4:29
walking in 3 months and that was like a
4:31
record or something and so he started
4:33
walking in 2 and 1/2 months and he's
4:35
like oh I beat you I stole it it's just
4:37
like a competition at this point of like
4:39
who can do what better or faster with a
4:42
prosthetic one thing that I love now is
4:44
wheelchair basketball it was just as
4:46
competitive as normal basketball it was
4:48
honestly harder it gave me an
4:50
opportunity to go to college off it
4:51
which I would never have found in like
4:53
lacrosse like the kid that I was playing
4:55
before kayen has handled this accident
4:57
so unbelievably well he's Ed so much
5:00
hope for so many people around him to be
5:03
that person at such a young age as his
5:05
mom I'm just so thankful to God for that
