Learn how to keep your bones strong
What is osteoporosis?
Osteoporosis is a disease that happens when you lose too much bone, make too little bone, or both. As a result, your bones become weak and may break from a minor fall. Osteoporosis affects more women worldwide every year than breast cancer, heart attack and stroke put together. The good news is that osteoporosis can be prevented and, in most cases, can be successfully treated.
Risk factors for osteoporosis include:
- Family history of osteoporosis and/or hip fracture.
- History of steroid use.
- Being post-menopausal (especially if having gone through menopause at an early age).
- Having rheumatoid arthritis.
- A history of broken bones from falls after age 50.
