Prisma Health implements advanced breast biopsy technology in Sumter
SUMTER, S.C.—Prisma Health Breast Center in Sumter is now utilizing a new breast biopsy system that is both more efficient for the staff and less invasive for the patient. The Brevara® Breast Biopsy System is used for 3D stereotactic breast biopsies and is considered a breakthrough in biopsy efficiency for its ability to streamline the procedure for patients.
“Our goal in mammography and breast imaging is to carefully screen and work up breast abnormalities affecting our patients. Then we can guide the patient and their provider to determine the best biopsy technique available that will help direct the course of treatment,” said Gilbert “Bert” Parker, MD, diagnostic radiologist. “Implementation of this advanced technology helps our team conduct these procedures quicker and with more accuracy than ever before.”
The Brevara system allows radiologists to x-ray samples immediately and in the same room as the patient. This reduces the time of the procedure and allows the provider to quickly find the areas of concern, reducing the number of samples required for analysis. The system is the only technology that offers this immediate x-ray capability.
Prisma Health Breast Center in Sumter is the only provider within 60 miles to offer this particular technology, and the first in the health system outside of metro areas of Greenville and Columbia. Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital Breast Center is a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence, fully accredited by the American College of Radiology and having achieved high standards for quality, staff and advanced technology.
