James R. Stallworth, MD, receives Career Achievement Award from South Carolina Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics

Wednesday, October 23, 2019

The South Carolina Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics (SCAAP) recognized the contributions of Prisma Health Children’s Hospital–Midlands pediatrician James R. Stallworth, MD with a Career Achievement Award. The award is given annually to a South Carolina pediatrician or child health care provider whose career has spanned at least 25 years.

During his 40-year career, Stallworth has taught nearly every student who graduated from the University of South Carolina’s School of Medicine (USC SOM) Department of Pediatrics. Stallworth is known for his challenging curriculum and unique, highly interactive teaching style. “My mantra is that I give a lot, so I expect a lot from my students,” said Stallworth. “They know they will have to perform under pressure. That helps prepare them for handling challenging situations they will face as physicians.”

“Dr. Stallworth is very deserving of this award,” said Prisma Health Children’s Hospital–Midlands Senior Medical Director Caughman Taylor, MD. “His legacy to our state’s children is not only through the learners he has taught and their impacts, but also his career as an unparalleled clinician, service to our state on child taskforces as a consultant and his service within the SCAAP!”

In addition to his role as Professor of Pediatrics, Stallworth serves as the first medical director for the USC SOM Physician Assistant (PA) Program, is director of medical student recruitment, directs the pediatric clerkship and is the founder of Finding Your Future, a program that provides clinical shadowing opportunities for pre-med students from all South Carolina colleges. He recently was honored by having the outstanding clinical PA student award named for him.

Stallworth has served on many medical school and hospital committees, chairing many of them. He has been the recipient of many teaching awards, most notably the Robert Glaser AOA Teaching Award, a national medical educator of the year award and has won a Gold Humanism Award from the medical school.

“It is such an uplifting experience to walk into Prisma Health Children’s Hospital–Midlands today and see how far we’ve come. We have extended our reach into the community through advocacy and legislative efforts and are always working to be of service to the community. We could not have come this far without tremendous support from the families and community we serve and the residents and students we have trained,” said Stallworth.
