Learning Experiences

PGY2 Cardiology Pharmacy Residency

Prisma Health Richland Hospital – University of South Carolina

One-month experiences (required)

  • Pharmacy operations/orientation
  • Cardiovascular intensive care
  • Inpatient cardiology (interdisciplinary academic rounds)
  • Cardiovascular surgery step-down (structured interdisciplinary bedside rounds)
  • Inpatient heart failure/transitions of care
  • Advanced heart failure/LVAD clinic
  • Primary prevention of cardiovascular disease clinic
  • Emergency medicine

One-month experiences (elective)

  • Advanced experience in one or more of the required experiences above
  • Electrophysiology
  • Inpatient decentralized cardiology/telemetry
  • Neuroscience adult medicine unit (stroke)

Longitudinal experiences (required)

  • Leadership and practice management
  • Central operations – every 4th weekend (Saturday and Sunday shift)
  • University of South Carolina College of Pharmacy Clinical Teaching Certificate (at discretion of RPD if teaching certificate completed during PGY1)
  • Complete one medication utilization evaluation project in cardiology with departmental impact to be presented at the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists Midyear Clinical Meeting
  • Complete one major project in cardiology with departmental impact to be presented at the Southeastern Residency Conference (SERC) or other acceptable conference, at the discretion of the program director

Other requirements

  • Provide a minimum of one Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE)-accredited continuing education programs to the department
  • One publication submission to a peer-reviewed journal
  • Actively participate on Medication Use Evaluation (MUE) and Pharmacy and Therapeutics (P&T) committees
  • Co-precept pharmacy students
  • Provide six in-service programs to pharmacists, nurses, medical residents, etc.
