Athletic Training Residency


Prisma Health offers an Athletic Training Residency program for certified athletic trainers. The purpose of our residency program is to enable athletic trainers to expand their knowledge in musculoskeletal evaluation and diagnosis as athletic trainers in the orthopedic office, to further their education awareness in all aspects of sports medicine, and to be able to work in a variety of clinical, surgical, research and educational settings. We are one of ten programs in the country accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE).

How to apply

Applications are accepted via the National Athletic Trainers' Association careers webpage. Our residency positions are typically posted early in the calendar year and the application period is open for 60 days. We recommend checking the listings between December and February. Search for available positions with keywords “residency program” in South Carolina.

Retention policy of athletic training residents

Residents will be evaluated after each rotation on academic performance, clinical performance, reliability, productivity, communication skills, and progression of athletic training skills by faculty and clinical instructors. Failure to meet minimum weekly expectations may result in probation, suspension, or dismissal from the Athletic Training Residency Program. The athletic training resident and residency director will meet to determine and implement educational steps and actions required to obtain minimum weekly expectations. Minimum weekly expectations include completion of didactic sessions, clinic responsibilities and surgical responsibilities. We monitor the weekly expectations using our weekly hour log. To be recommended to receive certificate of completion, resident must be in good standing with faculty and staff and earned a minimum of 50 credits out of possible 54 credits. The resident will receive ONE credit per week for completing weekly expectations.

In addition, the following retention standards must be maintained:

  1. Follow clinical expectations outlined in resident manual
  2. Abide by the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Code of Ethics
  3. Maintain CPR for Professional Rescuer certification
  4. Maintain national BOC certification
  5. Maintain requirements for state certification
  6. Maintain current immunizations (MMR, diphtheria, and TB)

Failure to meet the above retention standards may result in probation, suspension or termination from the program.

Progression policy of athletic training resident

Our policy regarding progression was developed after researching the Prisma Health Orthopedic Surgery Residency Program. For each workweek completed to expectations, the resident will receive one credit towards their overall commitment. The responsibilities of the week include but are not limited to: didactic, clinical and scholarly experiences. One credit per week is the maximum that may be earned for a total of 54. A minimum of 50 credits are required to successfully complete the program. Each week is documented and monitored by using the hour log. If the resident fails to meet the 50 credits in 54 weeks, the residency will be extended until the 50 credits are earned.
